The Fifteenth Sale.

Almost any collector of coins, be he connoisseur or novice, may find within these pages, items new or welcome to his collection. In Americana the very rare and choice dollars of 1794, 1836 (“Gobrecht in the field”,) 1838, 1839, 1851, 1852 and 1858, embrace all of the great rarities, excepting 1804. Added to this great list are two very choice half dollars of 1796 and 1797. There is an excessively rare half eagle dated 1797, struck over 1795, as well as a $3 gold piece of the Dahlonega mint.

In United States cents, the “Chain Ameri” of 1793, practically uncirculated, and sharp, and the “liberty cap” 1796, entirely uncirculated, are almost unequalled.

The very rare half cents of 1793, 1848, 1849, small date,

and 1852, all in very choice condition, are exceptional. Choice lots of Colonial and Continental currency, United States Frac- itoual currency, and Confederate issues, are included.

Collectors of foreign gold will find here a splended lot of about one hundred and fifty specimens in superb condition.

Antiquarians and collectors of ancient art objects, such as scarabs, glass, necklaces, weapons, pottery, Babylonian tablets and seals, will be interested in the collections of Prof. Emery and a private collector.

For $1.25 I will send you a catalogue priced in ink, after the sale. I find this charge must be made in order to prevent actual loss.

Coins and medals are sold at so much per lot and no lot will be sepa~ rated The auctioneer will accept an advance of 1 cent up to 50c., then 5c- up to $2.50, when 10c. advance must be bid, up to $10, -when no advance under 25 cents will be accepted. You can bid anything up to 50c., after that the bid must be 55c., or 60c. Such offers as 51c., $1.01, etc. , are unavailable.

Auction sales are strictly for cash. Parties unknown to me and bidding for the first time, umst give bank or other reliable reference.

Forward your bids as early as possible, as thousands of bids have to be entered. Do not make ridiculously low bids, such as 10 and 15c. on foreign silver coins worth several times over as bullion. Write your bids plainly, with a pen if practicable. I have taken special pains to carefully and fairly describe each lot.

Where the number of pieces in a lot is not given after the description, there is but one piece in the lot.

ANCIENT COINS.

(B. C. 600.) Thrace. Thasos. Obv. a naked, bearded satyr; holds nymph in his arms. Rev. a square punch- mark of four divisions. An extremely fine and rare didrachm of fine, archaic style. Seldom comes so per- fect as this.

(B. C. 400-450.) Athens. Obv. head of Athena in hel- met. Rev. an owl and AOE. Tetradrachm. Complete and fine.

(B. C. 310-23.) Macedon. Alexander the Great Tetra- drachm. Probably struck after his death. Obv. very large head of Hercules in lion’s skin. Rev. Zeus seated, and name of Alexander. Mint mark B (Cilicia). A piece remarkable both for size (30 mm.) and artistic modeling on both obverse and reverse. Very fine and rare.

EGYPTIAN FIND.

The following tetradrachms of Alexander the Great were found recently at Luxor in an old earthen pot in the side of an ancient well. This lot has not been offered before.

ANCIENT ROMAN, CAROLINGER AND SIEGBURGER

POTTERY.

American collectors are here given a rare opportunity to add to their collections some rare and genuine pieces of an- cient Roman, Carolinger and Siegburger pottery. The finds were effected in and about Cologne, largely along the mortu- ary limits of Lindenhal and the Luxemburger strasse. Ob- jects of Roman art and of later periods come to light from time to time during excavation and building work in Cologne and suburbs. Professor Emory, their owner, got these ob- jects in Cologne. They have formed part of the justly cele- brated cabinets of Mertens and Krewaldt, of Cologne. These gentlement acquired all they could lay their hands on of the material excavated in the Pheinprovinz, especially about Old Cologne. Excavations in the Norbertstrasse, Spiesenhof, Luxemburgstrasse, in Lindenthal, brought thousands of ob-

jects to light. With the exception of the few Carolinger and Siegburger and one Greek piece, they belong to the second to fourth century A. D., the time of the Roman occupation of the Rhine. The Carolinger and Siegburger were made by the Germans, conquered by the Romans.
